ABOUTHistory
The European Journalism Institute was launched July, 2004 by The
Fund for American Studies (TFAS), joining three other international programs located
in Prague, Greece, and Hong Kong in addition to five programs based in Washington,
D.C. EJI was developed in response to a growing recognition that journalists must
be empowered with the knowledge and skills needed to objectively report on a variety
of business and economic issues. The institute staff selects highly qualified
journalists and students of journalism to attend the unique one-week seminar in
Prague, the Czech Republic. The inaugural class of EJI was composed of 54 participants.
Freedom of the press has advanced rapidly in the former communist countries of
Central and Eastern Europe since 1989. However, it is important that ethical journalism
standards be enhanced to foster meaningful public dialogue. As economic growth
advances and private enterprise grows, it is particularly important that the public
is presented with a fair and accurate picture of economic policies and the business
community.
